Age is a State of Mind

Happy New Year 2010

So, I have been blog-absent because I started my new job on Wednesday morning. I am working as the assistant community director at Creekside Village, a retirement residence here in Beaverton. It was a management take-over..no always a little sticky. Not everyone was able to keep their jobs here, and I guess the older you get, the harder it is to deal with change of any kind. So I have spent the last few days hugging people and reassuring them that we're here to take care of them. Since this is my first management position, and its way different than the other properties I have been at, I have been a little nervous and on pins and needles. I guess its because normally residents just come and go, and really only come through the office if they are "in trouble"...but here its very different. This is their whole way of life, I don't want to mess it up.

I have been helping during breakfast the last couple days, and have already gotten to know the sweetest guy, Hal. This morning I was so tired from working about 14 hours yesterday, and nervous because I was running the dining room alone. Hal called me over and said,

"you know, you need to relax. (smiling knowingly). Some people try too hard, you're gonna be alright here. Theres nothin to worry about. Just be yourself. What I'm trying to say is..you're nervous and it shows. You'll be ok, alright, kid?"

I felt better instantly. All these people really want is someone to talk to, and to serve them their lunch, and make their lives fun. I mean, last night i spent new years eve dancing to a ragtime piano player with someone who told me they bought their first house for $2,000. I think I just need to take a deep breathe and realize that like Hal said, I'll be ok here. I love it already.
